“Boomerang” is a track that seems so disconnected that I can’t even begin to say what it even might mean. “Downtown” is the closest the brothers come to saying anything remotely interesting, but even here, the upbeat tones don’t match the biting lyrical mood in the slightest. “See It Through” ends by repeating the hook a total of eight times, and the number isn’t much better for “Got A Lotta Love.” In a nutshell, the tracks on Easy Way just don’t say anything. “Please Don’t Call Me Crazy” features a nice fuzzed out groove to it, but the random one-liners that speak of technology’s influence on modern society only barely scratch the surface of anything interesting.Īnd when I say Easy Way is repetitive, that’s barely an opinion. There’s two types of tracks here – love songs, and the sociocultural tracks that sound too disconnected to say anything of relevance. Granted, lyrics have always been the weakest element of a Cactus Blossoms album, but there’s some truly lazy songs here. The biggest failing of Easy Way is that it coasts on style over substance. As much as I hate to say it, Easy Way by the Cactus Blossoms is a disappointing followup for the duo, as nothing on this album sounds remotely interesting or shows the brothers in a new light. And when this record was described as being more “modern,” it seemed like the brothers were ready to step out of those aforementioned shadows.īut Easy Way is only more modern in the sense that now, instead of sounding like the aforementioned Everly Brothers, the Cactus Blossoms now sound like Simon & Garfunkel. They even went as far as to recruit top tier instrumental talent in Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and Michael Lewis of Bon Iver. Instead of JD McPherson behind the production wheel, the brothers handled things themselves. It’s meant as a compliment, but considering their production even pulled from the same retro, ’50’s leaning style of that era, it was hard to look at who The Cactus Blossoms really were.Īnd you can tell brothers Jack Torrey and Page Burkum likely took that to heart, as they completely shifted gears ahead of their newest release, Easy Way. It’s difficult to find a review of the Cactus Blossoms’ 2016 sophomore project, You’re Dreaming that doesn’t mention the Everly Brothers. On the other hand, there comes a point where those comparisons become inescapable, and instead of focusing on the artist’s (or duo’s or group’s or … ) own individual/collective talent, the main draw is what long lost time period they successfully evoke. On one hand, it can be a great way for them to have their careers gain traction. The long version: In a way, artists being compared to their influences puts them in a tough spot. Favorite tracks: “Easy Way,” “Got A Lotta Love,” “Please Don’t Call Me Crazy”.The short version: Despite featuring a more refined sonic palette, ‘Easy Way’ by the Cactus Blossoms doesn’t offer much of anything interesting.

The lack of HDMI inputs could be a problem for those with modern Sky or cable boxes, but it’s useful if you want to watch Freeview over the internet. The Slingbox Pro-HD is a very specialised device. There’s more compression and a lower resolution when viewing from outside your house, but it’s still watchable. Over a local network, picture quality was stunning – high-definition with few artefacts. This is shockingly expensive, though, at around £18. Once you’re set up, you can view TV in Internet Explorer, Safari or Firefox (Chrome isn’t supported) or on your mobile with the SlingPlayer app. We were surprised this couldn’t be done over UpNP and the setup wizard only provides instructions for a handful of routers – you’ll be better off going to for help. Ours needed port 5001 to be opened for streaming to a mobile device such as the iPad, iPhone or Windows Phone 7, Android or Symbian mobile phones. The setup wizard examines your router to see if any ports need to be opened in your firewall to access the Slingbox’s video stream from outside. You instead have to right-click and use the ‘clear’ option in a sub-menu to go back a step. The layout for our test Xbox 360 was also strange - there’s no ‘B’ button to go back a step, which makes the menu system unusable. If your source isn’t listed, there’s no way to set a custom remote layout, though. This links with an IR transmitter cable that you position in range of your source equipment’s receiver. Once the wizard has found a video signal on one of the ports, it prompts you to enter the name of the device plugged into the Slingbox so it can load the correct virtual remote control. This is clear enough, if sometimes painfully slow to load each step. Once you’ve got everything connected, the rest of the setup is done through an online wizard. If you want an EPG you’ll have to plug the Slingbox into an external Freeview box. However, the Program Guide isn’t available in the UK, so you have to choose channels manually. Simply plugging the Slingbox into your aerial and scanning for channels lets you watch Freeview online without plugging the ‘box into any other equipment. You’ll need to connect it to your home network – as there’s no built-in wireless, you’ll have to use an Ethernet cable or the SlingLink Turbo homeplug networking kit (£62 from There’s also an integrated DVB-T tuner. You can also connect standard-definition devices to the Slingbox’s composite or S-Video ports. This could be a problem as manufacturers phase out component outputs in favour of HDMI. There’s no HDMI input – as the Slingbox sends video back out over the internet, it’s unlikely to be compatible with the HDCP beloved of Sky HD boxes (see FAQ). There are component inputs to connect to an HD TV box, blu-ray player or media player such as an Xbox 360, and component outputs to loop back out to your TV. It makes for a refreshing change from French TV for those on business abroad.Īs the name suggests, the Pro-HD adds high definition video support. There are also smartphone players, so telly addicts don’t even need to carry a laptop. The Slingbox range plugs into your home video equipment and broadcasts its content over the internet, so you can watch your shows from any PC or Mac connected to the ‘net. The first thing I did after booting up the PCs, even before connecting to the Internet, was copy everything I could find onto DVDs and my own computers, then committing everything to version control. And not just the files, but the original development PCs, one with the arcade version and one with the Windows version, so I was able to compare them and choose one as a starting point. In addition to the license, Hyper Entertainment provided the original source assets, including the audio, textures, models and also the source code for both the arcade and Windows versions of the game. And I would have had to implement or do without a lot of goodies that we take for granted in modern game engines, like bump map shaders and dynamic shadows. I could have eschewed middleware altogether, but I had enough trouble just resuscitating the code enough for the asset conversion, much less port it to multiple new platforms. Even though my focus is mobile, I’ve also made Mac, Windows, webplayer, Flash, and Mac widget versions of HyperBowl, and the only major code difference is the between the touchscreen and mouse-driven control code. The multi-platform support is a huge advantage. I didn’t realize at the time it would be as popular as it is today (I believe this was before they made the Indie version free) and this was before Unity Android. So using Unity was the expedient choice and default choice, but it turned out to be a good choice. I only thought of porting HyperBowl to the iPhone a couple of years later when I heard the plans for Unity iPhone support and immediately thought how the screen aspect ratio of the iPhone was a good match for the tall projection screen of the original attraction game (nowadays, you can still find some of the attraction HyperBowls still running in venues like Dave and Busters with upended flat screen TVs replacing the original screens). In a way, Unity chose HyperBowl, as I started using Unity in 2007 because it ran on a Mac and had a webplayer and I happened to meet Joachim Ante at WWDC. Unity was the right choice for the game engine. And thus they granted me a license to develop it for the web, Mac/PC, mobile and the Wii (basically everything that Unity supported at the time). He agreed and suggested I just ask the owners of Hyper, and whaddya know, they said sure, they’re not actively developing it anymore, so why not. I only worked at Hyper Entertainment for the first few months of 2001 but kept in touch with the Director of Development there, Aaron Pulkka (now running his own show at Rabbx).Īround the time Unity announced their upcoming iPhone support, I mentioned to Aaron that I thought that would be a good way to get HyperBowl running on the iPhone. This version of HyperBowl came about because I worked on the original HyperBowl, developed by Hyper Entertainment and first deployed as an attraction game at the Sony Metreon in San Francisco. I've been working on it for six years, now - I wouldn't go so far as to say it's a labor of love, but at least a work of mild fondness. I’ve been holding off on a postmortem for my Unity version of HyperBowl, a 3D bowling game in which you bowl through various fantasy worlds (ancient Rome, the deck of a rocking ship, the streets of San Francisco…), until I achieved Flappy Bird success, but maybe I shouldn’t hold my breath. After looking at the Game Developer/Gamasutra-style postmortem of a GameCube title I worked on back in 2002, it occurred to me it’s about time I wrote another one. Some brand names you might like to note down include the Samsung Gear 360, the LG 360 Cam and the Ricoh Theta S these are all 360 cameras that have proven popular and they are relatively inexpensive. These cameras are user-friendly, priced competitively, and only require a few minutes to learn how to use effectively. This year has seen the release of several consumer 360 cameras aimed at everyday people who want to take immersive 360 photos. A few years ago this may have been the case, but the relentless advance of technology means that taking a 360 photo is just as easy as shooting with a compact camera. You may be wondering if 360 photos require advanced equipment and years of training to produce. New cameras being released all the time, and this new type of photography is at last accessible to the casual photographer. So it seems like 360-degree photos are here to stay, with large companies like Facebook, YouTube, and Flickr all adapting their photo sharing services to accept 360 images. If you want you can even upload your 360 photos to google where other people can view them on street view. In fact, businesses have used 360 photography to create internal immersive tours of their properties for years. You’ve probably used google street view to explore different places around the world, a 360 photo can be viewed exactly the same way. The 360 camera will capture the whole scene, allow you to look up at the sky, behind at the sand dunes and forward towards the ocean, all in one seamless image. A normal camera is limited to capturing the space where you point viewfinder, roughly 90° or so. Imagine the difference between photographing a beach using a normal camera compared to photographing the same beach with a 360-degree camera. So what is the point of 360-degree photos? Is it just a fad or is the medium here to stay? 360-degree photos present an opportunity for people to capture entire rooms, landscapes, and scenes in a single shot. Maybe someone down there can tell me where the hell I ended up. Watching below me, I hummed in interest when I noticed a small forest with what looked like a tiny little village in the middle and a waterfall that seemed very out of place a few clicks away from it. I pat his large metallic head with a smile on my face when he sat me comfortable on it and began floating downwards slowly. "Grab me with Confusion and set me on your back!" I ordered, no need to waste the extra energy on Psychic.Ī split second later, Metang's eye glowed with a bright blue power and my body's momentum shifted to a crawl. ".Tang?" Metang floated around him, humming on confusion. Now even my starter has trouble bringing him down even with a type advantage. But I raised my starter alone for months and earned three gym badges with just it before I ever got Metang as a weak little Beldum, rare but very weak when I got him. Granted, that doesn't sound all that impressive to people when they learn I've only got three pokemon. I couldn't even begin to imagine how much Metang was worth, but to me at least he was priceless and my second strongest pokemon. Honestly, just a normal Beldum would have been worth millions, this guy was a rare color, the only other person in existence who had a Metang like me at some point was the Hoenn Champion Steven Stone. I actually never caught it, having won it at a tournament on the S.S Anne. Metang was the second pokemon I ever obtained. Beside me, the shining silver and gold form of my loyal and reliable Metang coalesced into existence. Pressing the button in the middle I released the pokemon within in a burst of bright silvery light. I quickly palmed one of the shrunken pokeballs attached to my silver belt and expanded it to fit my palm. A mind capable of adapting to any situation was essential for any half decent pokemon trainer. That and the instinctive knowledge that I'd be fine, I had a pokemon that would be perfectly capable of seeing to my safety the plan to save myself shot into my head within seconds. It was mere luck I didn't soil myself out of fright. Granted size is also a factor.Ī scream of terror tore itself from my throat as I suddenly found myself falling from high altitude, plummeting through a layer of cloud formations and shooting down above what looked like a desert. Most of the pokemon are at their middle stages already because he's only focused on three of them, that and digimon are just flat out more powerful on average at the Champion level, the vast majority of them could easily take on fully evolved pokemon, going by their data at least. I picked three simply so I could work on three varied things to write about, I mentioned in the first one I haven't written in a while so I want to get back into the swing of things and I thought three different series would be enough to get the creativity flowing. Metang: Take Down, Confusion, Psychic, Metal Claw, Protect, Gravity, Icy Wind, Hyper Beamĭoublade: Fury Cutter, Metal Sound, Automize, Flash Cannon, Shock Wave, Protect, Shadow Sneakīlack Agumon: Tackle, Bubble, Acid Bubble, Pepper Flame, Spitefire Blast, Mach Jab, Black Bite, Dynamite KickĪn - This is the third and last quest I'll be working on. During his journey prior to arriving in the Digital World, Cobalt focused mostly on his starter pokemon in the beginning, spending at least a week in the Viridian Forest and obtaining three badges prior to gaining his second pokemon, which he won during a tournament on the S.S Anne.Ĭharmeleon: Ember, Flamethrower, Scratch, Slash, Metal Claw, Smokescreen, Thunder Punch, Quick Attack, Dragonbreath, Bite, Siesmic Toss, Protect And as a top scorer earned the right to chose one of the three yearly appointed Kanto Starter Pokemon, picking Charmander as his starter. What is known about him though, is that he's a young prodigy trainer having completed and passed the self defense and survival training courses and was one of the top three scorers in his class when passing the test to become a trainer, quite a bit younger than his classmates at that. History: Not much is known currently about Cobalt's past. Cobalt is cautious, even while well prepared and won't risk the safety of himself or his squad unless he's certain they can complete the objective without casualties.(Known to this point.) He dreams of becoming a Pokemon Master and won't let opportunity pass him by. Personality: A trained pokemon trainer and survivor, willing to be brutal, ruthless and even cruel when it comes to surviving. He finds himself in a strange foreign world filled with odd beings rather akin to Pokemon. A young prodigal pokemon trainer runs afoul an annoying Porygon and finds himself sent hurdling through the world of data. Not sure what to put here?
